Fire Hydrant Testing

InDepth Water Management offers a Nationwide Fire Hydrant Testing service that measures the pressure and maximum flow rate from the hydrant. Local Authorities require all fire hydrants to be tested at least once a year.

InDepth Water Management can offer fire hydrant testing and inspection either as a once-off or as part of an annual maintenance contract or more regularly.

InDepth conduct Hydrant Testing and maintenance not only for insurance purposes but to ensure operability if a fire were to occur.

InDepth Water Management also recommends that fire hydrant inspection should be done twice yearly. Our inspection will ensure that the accessibility, visibility and condition are thoroughly examined on each fire hydrant.

InDepth Water Management has a nationwide team of fully trained technicians who provide:

  • Uninhibited flow tests
  • Static pressure tests
  • Pit inspections
  • Frost valve checks

What does InDepth Fire Hydrant Testing Service Include:

  • 7-Day Pressure Logging to confirm the time of lowest/highest pressure on the network.
  • Flow Testing to confirm Maximum Sustainable Flow Rate Calculations
  • Static and Residual Pressure Tests
  • Leak Detection & Condition Assessment of Hydrants
  • Flow Simulation Calculations (For New Water Main Connections)

InDepth will survey all of your fire hydrants and provide a report on the status of:

  • Marker plate
  • Condition of chamber
  • Type and depth of fire hydrant

A flow and pressure test will then be performed on each fire hydrant.

The customer will receive a detailed report on each hydrant and recommendations on any remedial work that needs to be undertaken.

Included in the report is a schematic showing the location of each hydrant.

Below are some common questions in relation to Fire Hydrants and testing
  • A visible fitting/connection point where the emergency services can tap into a water supply.  It is a component of active fire protection.
  • A fire hydrant is usually a pipe in the street that accesses water. The main purpose of fire hydrants is for the fire brigade to attach a hose to the valve in the event of a fire.
  • Vital for Risk Mitigation in the event of a fire; if the fire hydrant does not operate as expected the damage caused by a fire could cause loss of life or far greater property damage.
  • Fire hydrants must be tested on an annual basis to confirm they meet all the required standards, otherwise your insurance policy could be deemed null and void in the event of an insurance claim following a fire.
  • Some insurers require proof of the annual fire hydrant test when renewing your commercial property insurance policy.
  • Water networks can change over time and often experience deterioration or  changes in use and that deterioration could reduce their efficiency in an emergency.
  • Local Authorities, Consulting Engineers and Developers: Taking In Charge Process, Planning Applications, Hydraulic Modeling.
  • Commercial, Industrial, Pharmaceutical, Healthcare & Educational Sectors:
  • For a fire hydrant, a competent person needs to test and maintain a fire hydrant in accordance with I.S.391:2020 on a six-month basis.
